I've been playing Ultimate in Melbourne since 1998. In that time I've sort of hung around like a bad smell near the VFDA, The Hat tournament, Nationals in 2002, and had a fair bit to do with setting up and organising the Albert Park Ultimate League. I won't bore you with the details. Last time I remembered them I was awake until two in the morning.

Apparently, though, I'm better known simply for spamming people every week with vague information and even vaguer attempts at humour in the name of telling people what time their game is on. You have to do something to break up the monotony when you are giving the same information each week. Also, apparently, people liked it. There is no accounting for taste. In case you are wondering why, here is a collection of what I wrote. I feel I can't throw it out. I don't know what your excuse is.

Ultimate Rosters

One of the issues with running a division or league of any sport is simply rostering when games are going to be. This is a non-trivial problem mathematically, let alone with the rest of the stuff that needs to be done. For the Albert Park league we played all games in the one location with typically a couple of time slots and three fields. As well as ensuring that a round robin of games is played through a season, we have preferred to make sure that people are spread across the fields and time slots in a random fashion -- less some reasonable variations -- to make sure people are playing on all the different surfaces across a variety of time slots. Unfortunately this becomes extremely non-trivial to work out when team numbers get high.

The following list of links are to text files that contain both a list of round robin games, and the same list with the position for each round randomised. These may be helpful if you ever have to run a division with up to 18 teams.
