Albert Park Winter season

Hi,

Well I can tell you are all champing at the bit to know what is
happening with the next season. All of you except those who are busy
with Nationals, holidays, or whatever else you unwashed masses do. Well
here it is: Monday Mixed and Wednesday Social Divisions (depending on
registrations there may be a need for a Mens Division on Monday). The
Social Division will continue as it has: the cost is $35 for the season
payable on the third week you play; training at 7:30pm and games at
8:30pm. Please come and support the next generation of Vic Ultimate players.

For Monday Mixed Division
Registration via the AFDA system:
   http://www.afda.com/rego/showdivision.php?divisionid=332

- Season from May 8th to August 28th.
- Two time slots intended (7pm and 8:30pm).
- Club teams may register subject to approval by the VFDA Committee.
- Hat teams have been added to the competition for individual
registrations (note conditions in parenthesis).
- Cost is $40 per person payable *prior* to the season starting. The
aim is not have teams with ghost players who never show. You have
around three weeks to get organised. For Club/Uni teams, you need to
provide a *full* roster for each team (15 players I believe) and have
them *paid*. Payments should be made to the following VFDA account:

Westpac Bank
BSB 033072
Acc 191820

Please remember to include your surname and initial or your AFDA number
when making the payment.

Get cracking people!

Merry Autumn,

Sam

Albert Park Winter season, week 1 (pre email)

Yo,

Sitting at home I realised I have absolutely no idea when I'm playing
for the start of the new winter season. Strangely enough my thoughts
went out to my fellow brave Ultimate players planning on playing through
the upcoming season of 17 weeks, and figured I may as well email people
to let them know. That's the kind of guy I am: one with no life. So
games are as follows:

Monday night, May 8
7pm Ligers (white) v Pity The Fool (black)
Hat Team 2 (purple) v MUF (blue)
The Real MUFcoy (yellow) v Moho (blue-white)
8:30pm Frisburne (red-white) v BUUF (navy)
Hat Team 1 (green) v Honey Badgers Dominators (yellow)
  	Mens A-K v L-Z

Looks like a good season with ten teams. In fact I've never had to make
up a ten-team roster before, so this is impressive for a winter season.
Whatever. Don't forget, gentlemen, for those of you who have more
energy than me, there will be late game between the guys with surnames A
to K and those with surnames L to Z. We will be watching this with
interest.

And kudos to Steve Wealands and the rest of the VFDA Committee for their
efforts in getting the season organised, and bullying people into paying
early.

Regards,

Sam

PS The hat teams are:

Hat Team 1 (green) consists of Rebecca Ackland, Daniel Blau, john giles,
shawn Goldberg, Simon Gorr, Tim Hordern, Catherine King, Erin Klassen,
Doug Liddicoat, Nishith Mahanty, Andrew Olennick, Nicole Strutynski,
Jeff Su, Margaret Taub, stephen waddell, Sam Waugh, and Tim Wise.

Hat Team 2 (purple) consists of Luke Baldock, Mat Bowen, James carroll,
Sophie Crilly, Geoff Doty, Rod Every, Kathryn Flanagan, Mel Gangemi,
Peter Gillam, David Knight, mike lockhart, Dean McDonald, Julian
Reynolds, Andreas Stierwald, Natalie Thompson, and Tim Wardrop.

Albert Park Winter Season, week 1

Hi all,

A long season coming up and teams are starting to get it together.
Through the excellent efforts of Steve Wealands, nearly everyone has
paid and all teams have colours allocated for the Monday night Mixed
Division. Just so you know there have been some modifications to the
roster for Monday nights: no match-up changes, but there are some time
changes, which should be the last for the season. The draw has tried to
ensure that the uni teams are playing each other during Uni Games,
that BUUF have late games so they can get to the fields, that Ligers and
Pity The Fool alternate times so the comptrollers don't have to hang
around in the cold when not required, and so the hat team guys have a
greater chance to play the mens games. If you don't like the roster,
colour it in pink to see if it makes you happier.

Results? Really not much to say after a single round. So I'll shut up.
  (Go the Brown!)

Wednesday night is going along nicely too. I have a theory that the
weather on Wednesdays is better than Monday. It certainly was last
week. Feel free to come along and join Craig, LB and the crew.

Regards,

Sam

Albert Park League report, week 2

Hi all,

Week two of the Albert Park League was certainly blessed with some good
weather. Cool, humid and still seemed to sum up last week. Hopefully
it'll last through this week (a few showers forecast for Monday and fine
day on Wednesday). Ah Melbourne and your fickle weather gods... BTW
I've been told that the extra game scheduled on Monday nights is open to
all comers: whether you are playing the Mixed season or not. It is
designed to ensure those who want to can get an extra run on Mondays.
If you are not playing the Mixed season, feel free to join in the fun.
That includes an women who are so inclined.

The Mixed season seems to be going well. Honey Badger Deltas have had
comprehensive wins in their first two games. I figure the "Dominators"
bit was a typo, and celebration of the impending Aus v Greek friendly
"Deltas" is the perfect follow-on from the "1s" and the "As". I hope
they don't move to cyrillic next season. BUUF, playing in the late time
slot, and Moho round out the teams who are undefeated. It would seem
team cohesion has been a bonus in this early part of the season. Still
12 more rounds to go. The next round has a few interesting games,
including just about every potential colour clash. Yellow playing
yellow, white playing white, and all the dark colours playing late in
the evil time slot. MUF v Moho should be interesting, as will Fools
playing BUUF with Fools losing to Moho the week before. The two Hat
teams play in the non-colour clash (go Brown!), and Ligers v Frisburne
sees two teams chasing their first win of the season.

Wednesday is also swinging along nicely, with around 50 people showing
up last week. Perfect playing conditions and lots of new enthusiastic
players running around a lot more than I was. Experienced players are
always welcome to come down and impart some of that ulti wisdom you have
gathered from others who helped you learn. Does guilt work with you guys?

Good luck in your games this week. Except Purple.

Albert Park League report, week 3

Hi,

"Stuff" about weather. I'm not going to say anything else: I don't want
to get rained on again after taunting the weather gods last week. I was
intrigued to see that people are even approaching me to get mentioned in
these reports. Well, adoring fan, it's not that easy. You have to do
something special like injuring yourself in a monumentally stupid way,
or doing something like Carroll. Our intrepid new-secretary and
line-marker a few months ago tried to to get his initials on Google
Earth. So don't forget to thank him for his efforts. If only he could
add brick marks...

Another interesting round with interesting results last Monday (I am the
master of the build-up...). Most of the games were pretty close, which
bodes well for the rest of the season. Honey Badgers have extended
their goal difference into the twenties and are joined by BUUF as the
only undefeated teams, which should change this week considering they
are playing each other. Ligers are Purple Lining are also maintaining a
perfect record, which should change this week given they are playing
each other. (I just reread that and realised cut-and-paste could have
been my friend.) And in the other three games, six teams have the
chance of a 2-2 win-loss record. Oh the potential symmetry!

Wednesday nights is also kicking along really well. The combination of
training (7:30pm), games (8:30pm) and pub (9:30pm) seems to be working
well. The more the merrier.

Regards,

Sam

Albert Park League report, week 4

This season is long. We're coming up to round 5, so I'm going to have
keep making up stuff for another 10 weeks or so. At least we get a
break next week with the Queens Birthday holiday, so I'll get a rest.
(Did you like the way I worked that mention of a holiday in? No,
neither did I.)

Interesting week, with Honey Badgers not proving as dominant as they
were (should have left the name the same...) and Frisburne getting their
first win. MUFcoy upset BBALC, and the Fools had a good win against
MUF. Pretty even at this stage with ten rounds to go. Definitely
possible for all teams to make the semi-finals. Good also to see that
the pick-up game has been running for a couple of weeks. If you are
interested in a run, then feel free to drop down at 8:30pm.

Wednesday continues along nicely. So nicely that they are talking about
creating a roster, but only for the pubs afterwards. All suggestions
welcome. Training 7:30pm, playing, 8:30pm and pubbing 9:30pm.

Good luck and may the weather continue to be blessedly fine,

Sam

Albert Park League report, week 5

Hi all,

Firstly, a quick reminder that there are no Monday night games this week
due to the Queen's Birthday holiday. Like you needed reminding.
Wednesday night Social Division games continue as normal, crazily, on
Wednesday night (7:30pm training, 8:30pm game, 9:30pm pub).

Secondly, spirit. There have been a number of games recently that have
been getting very low spirit scores, so Wheely asked me to mention
something about it.
Let's face it, adoring fan, we are not playing for sheep stations here
(unless of course MacDonalds have had a Happy Meal promotion I don't
know about). Most people are playing for fun and exercise. So think
about how you can improve the spirit on your team, even if is simply
telling the hothead to pull their head in.

And please don't confuse spirit with not making calls. I think that not
calling fouls is as unspirited as calling badly, because you are not
playing in the spirit of the game. The rules are there to make the game
work, and no one should be afraid to make a legitimate call. Excessive
complaining could be intimidating people from making the right call.
Letting things go without a call reinforces bad play. Maybe people will
get calls wrong; maybe they are actually right. Spirited play means
respecting your opposition.

The implication of this is that you should actually read the the rules
(http://vfda.asn.au/info/2001ultirulesrev.html). I know Worlds-level
players who haven't read them and it shows: they would be better players
if they did. Stop asking me what the rules are and read them for
yourselves. I read them years ago, and I can't remember them anymore.

Enjoy your night off,

Sam

Albert Park games this week...

Hi all,

After the luxury of a holiday last week, this week sees the return of a
full complement of games. Wednesday night Social Division will be
continuing on without Craig as he takes a well-earned sojourn back to
the northern hemisphere. I personally blame his complete lack of body
fat for requiring him to head north for the winter. Anyway the
committed will be turning out for training (7:30pm), games (8:30pm) and
pub (9:30pm) under the guidance of Michelle. LB will probably turn up
too. He always does. (Happy birthday for a couple of weeks ago, LB. I
forgot...)

Monday night games are as follows, for those unable to find the roster
on the website (http://vfda.asn.au/):

Round 6, June 19
7pm Purple Lining (purple) v Frisburne (red-white)
Pity The Fool (black) v The Real MUFcoy (yellow)
Bob Brown's Adopted Love Child (green) v MUF (blue)
8:30pm Ligers (white) v BUUF (navy)
Honey Badgers (yellow) v Moho (blue-white)
Open Pickup: Under 28 (light) v 28+ (dark)

Moho have shot to the top of the ladder with BUUF losing to MUF and
Honey Badgers losing to BUUF. Their time in the sun could come to
sudden end this week as they play Badgers. The Brown play MUF in a must
win contest for both teams to stay in contention for the finals. Okay,
so it isn't a must win, but winning would be nice. It is a battle
between 6th and 7th. Purple Lining play Frisburne in the battle of
places 8 and 9, and Fool play Real in the battle of 4 and 5. Ligers
have a tough ask against a reasonably in form BUUF.

Only eight more rounds after this one people! It's getting to crunch
time. I'm running out of adjectives. I hope you've done your homework
and read the rules (http://vfda.asn.au/info/2001ultirulesrev.html)

Oh, and don't forget about The Big Wet this coming weekend (register
online at http://vfda.asn.au/tournaments/).

Regards,

Sam

Albert Park League report, week 6

Hi,

Interesting results from last week. Actually I don't have a clue what
the results were from last week. I'm just being precious by pointing
out that nobody tells me anything anymore. If you feel the same, please
feel free to write to your local member of parliament, or turn up at the
next Tuesday June 27th at the VFDA committee meeting. (I'm sure there
will be an email telling us where sometime soon.) Also consider whether
you would be interested in helping the all-volunteer VFDA: the AGM will
be on the 11th of July. Many thanks in advanced to this year's
committee for all the work they have put in.

Enough of the plugs. Games for Monday are listed below. Wednesday will
be training, games and the odd beverage afterwards. You work it out:
I'm feeling grumpy.

Albert Park League report, week 7

Hi,

Normally I include the current ladder with the league report, but I lost
it. Clever huh. I claim that I lost it because this week my ISP email
blew up, my modem blew up and work email blew up so it wasn't my fault.
Thank you for caring, loyal fan. Regardless the ladder is up-to-date
and on the website at http://vfda.asn.au/albertpark/ (simply click on
the Monday roster and results link).

Well we have reached the half way point of the regular season. Seven
games down and seven to go to decide who will be in the semi-finals. It
is worth reviewing the rules for ranking teams at this point -- I mean
we've all got the importance of good spirit down pat -- especially as
there are a number of teams on the same win-loss record. The
tie-breaker rules do not simply rely on the goal difference: it is
unlikely that spanking a lower ranked team will increase your ranking.
Specifically the rules are fewest forfeits (no forfeits so far this
year), record against the other tied teams (for example MUF has lost to
Fools and Badgers and hence is lower with the same win-loss), net points
scored in games against the other tied teams (I'm sure this has come
into effect but I can't find an example), record against teams that
placed above the initial set of tied teams (anybody guessed I use
software to work this all out?), net points scored in games against
teams that placed above the initial set of tied teams (does anybody know
what this means?), and finally net points scored in games against all
teams in the pool (goal difference: I know that one).

So the Monday Mixed Division seems to be splitting into two groups, and
it'll be interesting to see whether a team could shift between them. In
the top group we have Moho and BUUF on 6-1 yet to play each other, and
Fools, Badgers and MUF on 5-2. All these teams have positive overall
goal difference. This next round sees Moho and BUUF line up and Fools
play the Badgers; important games for standings. MUF will be looking
for a win over Frisburne.

In the lower group all with negative overall goal differences, we have
MUFcoy on 3-4, The Brown and Lining on 2-5, Frisburne on one win and
Ligers battling at the bottom. The Purple v MUFcoy this week will be
close, and Ligers are going to be coming hard at the guy-heavy Brown in
an attempt to get that first win. An interesting round.

As always, the Social Division is running on Wednesdays as well:
training, games and pub. All good.

Good luck,

Sam

Albert Park League report, week 8

Hi,

A busy week for Victorian Ultimate. Monday night Mixed Division games
and pick-up. Tuesday night is the VFDA AGM at the Arcadia (all
interested in how we plan your favourite sport are welcome) at 7pm.
Wednesday is Social Division (7:30pm training, 8:30pm games, 9:30pm
pub). And of course Thursday sees the ever popular Eastern Suburbs
games. With the completion of SUG last week, it certainly is a busy time.

On that subject, games from SUG played by university teams count towards
our Mixed Division results, and please pass on your spirit scores to
Steve or Ash. A pity then that we did not see the near-the-top of the
table clash of Moho and BUUF, currently recorded as a no result. It
could have implications as the season progresses to who gets into the
final. Why, I hear you ask? Well it all depends on how we count no
results: whether we count them as wins, losses or ties. Should you get
partial points for not playing a game? Which one is it, I hear you ask?
I'm not telling. Cause I don't know. But I'll make something up I'm
sure, unless anyone else has any strong opinions. In my mind the easy
way to resolve this would be for Moho and BUUF to play on a spare field
on a Wednesday night, but that is up to the captains to work out.

Regardless, MUF bolts to the head of the table -- as it currently stands
-- as they have the same number of wins as Moho and BUUF and have beaten
both those teams. Fools are tipping in at 4th also with six wins having
beaten the wilting Badgers last week in a nail biter. I was on the
sideline and can definitely remember biting my nails (I hate it when the
disc catches..). Things seem to be separating like oil and water at the
lower end of the table. We'll see if this week's games will upset that
status. It would be good to see some upsets.

Later,

Sam

Albert Park League report, week 9

Hi,

Another week over, and about 5 more left in the current season.
Wednesday Social Division is -- surprise, surprise -- continuing, and
the quality is even increasing given that I haven't been able to get
there because of work. Usual story: training 7:30pm, games 8:30pm and
pub 9:30pm all under Michelle and Craig's steady guidance.

Monday Mixed Division is starting to resolve. After last week where the
conditions could be described as being trying -- but only if you are
trying to avoid using the word "appalling" in a sentence -- we have
completed a full set of games with only Moho and BUUF having not played.
Five teams are still in the running for the four semi-finals spots.
I'm guessing ten wins will be needed to grab one of those top four
places, leaving MUF and Badgers closest to elimination. None of the top
five play each other in this round, so all will be wanting to get "easy"
wins. Well, we'll see about that. See you Monday.

Ciao,

Sam

Albert Park League report, week 10

As I type, I'm looking out my front window gazing at the rain falling
steadily from the sky. That is when I'm not looking at the pub. Could
be mushy at the fields this week if this keeps up. The pub? Not so
mushy. Round 11 coming up meaning we have four more weeks before the
semi-finals on Monday nights. Wednesdays continue to provide awesome
ultimate with awesome people: go along. LB is bound to be there. So
let's check out the four week Monday plan...

Moho, BUUF and Fools are sitting on 8 wins with either Moho or BUUF to
gain another potential win from their game which they were rude enough
not to play at SUG (poor spirit people!). Moho and Fools match up this
week in a potential semi-final matchup, with Moho going on to play MUF,
Frisburne and Purple Lining: my prediction is 3-1. BUUF, playing late
as per usual, have Purple Lining this week followed by Fool, Honey
Badgers and MUF in a hard run home: 2-2. Fool, obviously have a tough
run with Moho, BUUF, MUF and The Brown: no chances 0-4 and dropping out
the finals race. Badgers and MUF round out the teams with strong finals
aspirations. Badgers have MUF, MUFcoy, BUFF and Ligers: 0-4 with half
their team not turning up. MUF, and I know I'm repeating myself here,
have Badgers, Moho, Fool and BUUF, which may be considered the toughest
run to the finals: 4-0. Somebody should give the man who did the draw a
beer. For getting a tight last few weeks in the draw, not for
predicting winners. In case you hadn't guessed I don't gamble, let
alone add.

Good luck and don't forget you floaties,

Sam

Albert Park League report, week 11

Hi all,

Another week, another crap weather report from me. I give up. Three
rounds to go and the Badgers are out of the top four with a loss to MUF
last week. BUUF and Moho also won, with Fool taking Moho to the cap
call from the look of the score line. I'd really like to be able to
predict who will be in the finals, but it isn't obvious. Moho look a
certainty, Badgers have some "easier games", Fool have hard but fair
game to come against Brown, and MUF and BUUF have all three remaining
games against teams in the top five. Harder to pick than broken nose.

In other games this week, Brown and Purple hit out this week in a
challenge of the two hat teams (7 v 8). Ligers play Frisburne who are
listed well below their capabilities (9 v 10). And The Real MUFcoy
could really spoil the chances of Badgers with a win (5 v 6) and maybe
even place themselves into finals contention. It is that close.
Definitely an interesting round. And more to come on Wednesday. Don't
get me started on Wednesday. Let's just say that last week's games were
played at a damn fine standard. Kudos to LB and Michelle for the
obviously excellent training they have been providing.

Good luck, and don't forget to vote for your favourite Association name.
A random lucky voter will win a fully self-funded dinner with Scamby!
How could you say no?

Albert Park League report, week 12

Hi,

An early report this week. I know it is out of character but I have
people to see and places to visit, so if this doesn't work for you get
your people to call my people. We are in the last throws of the Monday
night Mixed Division season, and it could only get more exciting if John
Howard personally came down to tell us how the interest rate rise wasn't
his fault. Wednesdays continue, strangely, on Wednesday evening, and
soon we will have registrations happening for the next Spring season.
It's all go.

As the final weeks trickle through our fingers like the sands of Death's
hourglass -- yes, I'm feeling morbid -- I spent some time when I should
have been working to try and inform you people of the potential outcomes
for the finals race. You've probably worked this stuff out, but I'm
slow. So, eleven wins will guarantee a place in the semi finals, and
ten could cut the cheese. Badgers need to win both games, and beating
BUUF by more than one goal will put them ahead of BUUF if BUUF win their
other game. BUUF will finish ahead of MUF if they win against them by
more than one goal. MUF is the only team that can finish ahead of Moho
on the same win-loss record, and need to beat Fools by more than 3 goals
to be ahead of them. Fools should finish ahead of Badgers and BUUF in a
tied contest, and MUF if they lose by less than 3 goals. Moho will only
be out if they lose both games... Sod it. I don't care anymore. I
can't work it out. Final placings for the other teams also depend on
the final few weeks. You guys had to make it sooo complicated, didn't you.

Sam

PS Brown: I am missing the next two weeks. Sulking. In Sydney and Darwin.

Albert Park League report, week 13

Hi,

I thought I'd take a minute to report what is happening in the Albert
Park League. Let's face it, it would only take a minute as I don't have
a clue what is going on on sooo many levels. "Who is sleeping with
who?" More importantly to me "who has broken up with who so I don't put
my foot in my mouth?" "Actually, who is that person?" "No, the one
whose name I've been told fifteen times...?" The questions are endless,
and the facts are few. So enough banter. Even I'm finding it boring.

The ladder of current results is presented below. Funnily enough I
switched my mail reader over to be able to receive html emails the other
day. (I know, I'm old school. Been reading email since '89 when "rn"
was the big mail reader on the block. Hell, one of my uni supervisors
invented the smiley -- Scott Fahlman -- look him up if you don't believe
me.) Before this email turns into an old-timer story involving playing
ultimate with hub caps I'll just apologise for the load of crap at the
end of an email that looks reasonable when not viewed as html but
pretends to be a result table otherwise. Welcome to the finals Moho.
MUF are also coming home strong and look like making the grade as well.
Badgers with the big win last week are looking good as BUUF continues
to slip in the contention stakes for the final four placings. Ligers
came oh so close to grabbing their first win, the Brown have a chance of
matching MUFcoy's ranking this week after winning against them last, and
Purple Lining I discovered this week are named after a school motto.
Good one Carroll.

The final round is still interesting. The Badgers will be playing for
the win against Ligers, and hoping BUUF lose to MUF to make the
calculations easy. Fools are safe unless both Badgers and BUUF win and
they lose against the Brown. Lining are playing for pride -- see
carefully crafted allusion to school logo lions there -- against a
dominating Moho, and Frisburne will be pushing to get into the 7-8
play-off. Every game counts.

Finally don't forget the ever continuing and popular Wednesday night
ultimate (training, games, pub) at your favourite fields of mud.

Good luck,

Sam

PS Brown: sorry Darwin this week...

Albert Park League report, week 14

Hi,

Interesting times we live in. The Juniors did very well at the World
Championships, and we lose our fields for the entire month of September.
Coincidence? I think not. Weather in September is usually crap
anyway, which means by simply typing that statement it'll be fine all
month and piss down in October. Watch out for further emails on what is
happening for next season. All I know is that I have breathing space
before having to make major alterations to the website. Definitely
happy with that.

So the final round has been played with loads of close results last
Monday night. Okay, I'm lying: call it creative licence. Or
truthiness, straight from the gut. But by god the differences between
teams in that final round were low; or at least the spirit was low from
all accounts. To be honest I wouldn't know (Darwin was nice, thanks for
asking). Pick up your game people, there are no sheep stations on the
line here.

The last round has, however, settled the standings for the season. With
ten teams in play the tie-breakers in ranking have only been needed
twice. Fools got the edge over Badgers due to their two point win in
round eight. Purple Lining pip over Frisburne with a three point goal
difference from round 6. The final four is then Moho, MUF, Pity The
Fool and Honey Badgers. BUUF slowly slipped out of contention, probably
due to some loss of junior players to the World Juniors squad. Bummer
dudes. I could wax lyrical anon, but my writing really isn't that
clever. So the games for next week are as follows:

Aug. 21
7pm Moho v Honey Badgers
MUF v Pity The Fool
BBALC v Purple Lining
8:30pm BUUF v The Real MUFcoy
Frisburne v Ligers
Pickup Aus. (light) v World (dark)

Note that many games are different from the advertised time slots. This
is to allow BUUF the late game and to let our wonderous Division
Coordinators -- Wheely and Ash -- to continue passing boring cones
between cars. Both semi's will be at 7pm, along with the hat team
grudge match. The 5 v 6 and 9 v 10 and a pick-up game are later. You
are playing for pride people! And don't forget that Wednesday nights
will continue for the rest of the month. I hope.

Good luck,

Sam

Albert Park League report, semi-finals

Hi all,

Welcome to the penultimate report for this wonderous Winter season. As
you would know we go into a brief hibernation for the month of
September: Parks Victoria are installing a new watering system and
hopefully doing some field reseeding. We'll see how they go soon. But
before that we have the final of the Monday night Mixed Division, if you
will allow me to start a sentence with a conjunction. AND we also have,
if I may be so bold as to split an infinitive, the end of season party
(1st of September, Arcadia, 7:30pm on, wear a hat).

Before we get into the report proper, let me briefly go over Sam's
Report FAQ for the season:

Q: What does FAQ mean?
A: Frequently Asked Questions you ninny.

Q: Can you mention me in your report?
A: Yes I can.

Q: Can this make the report?
A: Have I mentioned my memory span before?

Q: Why do you always leave the important information until the end so I
have to read through everything before finding it out?
A: It's always in the same place, Dean. What's the problem?

Q: What drugs are you on when you write these reports?
A: Unfortunately this is the sort of crap that I have to live with. Do
you know what it is like having all these voices? (Shut up, Barbara!)

Q: When are you releasing podcasts?
A: When my dad finds out how to subscribe.

Q: So, is that likely to be soon?
A: You obviously haven't met my dad.

Q: Do you enjoy writing down everyone's questions and coming up with
smarmy answers?
A: Not as much as I thought I was going to.

So to this weeks results, and just to confuse Dean:

Semi 1: Badgers 15 def. Moho 5
Semi 2: Pity The Fool 15 def. MUF 7
5 v 6: BUUF 9 def. The Real MUFcoy 6
7 v 8: Purple Lining 11 def. Bob Brown's Adopted Love Child 8
9 v 10: Ligers 15 def. Frisburne 11

Let's just call this the round of upsets and be done with it. Starting
at the bottom of the above list, Ligers came through where it counted to
win their first game of the year and slip into ninth. Purple Lining
defeated Brown for the first time this year, as a depleted Brown were
abandoned by their younger players leaving the fielded team with an
average age of over 35. Brown were nevertheless buoyant following the
birth the night before of Nish and Apana's twins: mmmerere and nnerere
(or something I told you I have a bad memory!). BUUF and MUFcoy looked
like a solid contest when I wandered passed the game, taken out in the
end by BUUF in what was possibly the least correctly predicted most
expected result. Obviously the results of the semi's were completely
unexpected. 1 v 4 was completely shocking given the seeding, with the
Badgers racing out of the blocks and taking the half 8-0. Somehow the
slightly windy conditions, the sight of the Badgers warming up, and Paul
Egan's legs (go "billiards") seemed to crush the spirit of Moho. Or
maybe it was something else. My bet is on Badger-roids. On the other
field Fools also played against seeding to beat MUF convincingly. It
would seem that the semi-finals are necessary for a Division of this size.

So next week, as well as seeing the continuation of Wednesday Social
Division games for those who are missing their ultimate fix, sees the
completion of the Monday night winter season with the final being play
by Pity The Fool and Honey Badgers. Come down and watch the game,
Monday the 28th of August at 7pm or there abouts. It should be a great
night, with a BBQ, beverages and recently marked lines giving a first
for Victorian Ultimate: The Hill. Following the final at 8:30pm will be
a demonstration game: Oz vs THE REST OF THE WORLD. If you are
interested in a high-level mixed game you may be wanting to bring the
togs down for this one (including a light and dark top).

Hopefully we will see you at the fields,

Sam

Albert Park League report, finals

Hi,

Well not much to write home about here. Finals were last week and we
get a break from ultimate for September, unless of course you are
playing in the Mixed Nationals tournament or are training for the World
Clubs tournament. Madness if you ask me.

Monday night saw the showdown of the hideously large team Pity The Fool
-- they almost had another team on the sideline -- and the increasingly
large Honey Badgers. The game started pretty close to 7pm given some
tremendous beer-fuelled timekeeping, and the moderate crowd of 50 to 100
people saw the Fools burst out to an early lead of 3-1 after initially
trading points, snapping what seemed to be continual scoring to the end
where the crowd wasn't. The pattern for the rest of the half settled in
though with Badgers working their way back into the game, capitalising
on some easy mistakes. I could give you a point-by-point recap, but
that would be pure fiction. I was usually facing the wrong way. It is
an interesting fact of the game that 90% of all turn-overs were
committed by someone called Alex, and there candidates from both teams.
The teams went back to point trading from 5-5 to 7-7, and finally
Badgers managed to take the half 8-7. Highlight was Mama's layout, and
some very tight marking from both sides, making the offense look sloppy
at times. After the half, when the crowd had swelled to 2700 and the
BBQ started, turn-overs started to mar the performance of the Fools.
They only managed one more score before full time, with Honey Badgers
taking out the game 12-8. Or something like that. Congratulations to
the Badgers yet again. Best male players from my point of view were
Steve Wealands who's unselfish play meant Alex had greater chance to
turn the disc over, and Dave Coles who threw himself on the ground a
number of times. That impresses me. I refuse to do it. For the women,
Mama of course and Doug Moore because he spent more time playing with
his daughters and being on the field. The Fools didn't go away
empty-handed winning the spirit award for the season: congratulations!
The Divisional Male MVP was Matthew Hui, and female MVP Mel Gangemi.

The final was followed by the premier pick-up game game between
young-Victorians vs. old-non-Victorian-hindu-vegetarians. Of course the
good guys won, with special mentions to Sascha for his impression of
Maradonna, and James "Prancer" Carroll for wearing the gayest pair of
white cleats you have ever seen.

Wednesday night saw a sizeable turn-out for the final week with a Kings
and Queens format finish: three games of 20 minutes, followed by pizza,
encouraged 20 odd people to the pub afterwards. Prizes were awarded at
the hat party on Friday night, but I can't remember any of them.

The next season starts in early October. We'll have information to you
about registrations ASAP. In the meantime relax and get fat, or head to
the Eastern League for a game on Thursdays.

Enjoy the start of Spring,

Sam
