Albert Park League report, week 1

Albert Park League report, week 2

Albert Park League report, week 3

Hi,

Well the first couple of weeks saw a lack of results being published,
and I was ready to cast wild aspersions around until I realised it was
probably because I wasn't doing them... So in an attempt to bring back
the reporting standards that you have all come to know and love -- "The
best weekly report in Victorian ultimate", M. Stubbs -- we have spared
lots of expense in bringing you... the same results as before. They are
attached below, along with the next round of games.

Week three saw the completion of the first full round of mens games,
with Eastern Warriors showing the benefit of playing the previous
season. All teams look reasonably evenly matched with only Nup living
up to their name in the Goal Difference front. I don't know if Warriors
or Bogans can traditionally count above four, but I'm sure two is not
the stuff Nightmares are made of. Work with me here, there is not much
material... It's an eleven round season, so there is plenty of room for
changes. Email DC Simon (simon@vfda.asn.au) if you need any further
information or have lost anything.

The Mixed Division is also showing the benefits of being in a pre-formed
team, with the Honey Badger teams, Caufield and Monash figuring in the
top four. Somebody do something. Badgers A and 1 final would be a
nightmare. How did they even split these teams up? [News just to hand:
roving reporter Paul "Papa" Egan has just informed me by text -- as I am
too lazy to get to the fields -- that Badgers have made it through in
second place in the WUCC qualifier games. We wait for news about
Eureka. Paul in the meantime is grinning; and by that I mean when does
he stop?] Email DC Karen (karen@vfda.asn.au) if you need any further
information or wish to submit a score. This week will be interesting
with the Badgers playing the Badgers...

And of course the Social Division is continuing: all welcome for
training at 7:30pm, followed by games at 8:30pm. Email DC Craig
(craig@vfda.asn.au) if you want further information or wish to play.

Note how you don't email Sam (sam@vfda.asn.au). Oh unless you have
additions for the website. Or news. Or party invites.

Regards,

Sam

In celebration of James Carroll's sterling effort to attend the Kaimana
Classic in Hawaii -- I don't think anyone else was going -- this email
is being sent on Sunday night Hawaiian time. It in no way delayed
through any fault of the writer, nor can it be blamed on the my
attendance of a Buck's Party on Saturday and spending all of Sunday
moving house. In no way. Well, maybe a little bit.

Enough banter. What a fascinating bunch of games in the last round.
Let me tell you, the spirit scores were high. My personal theory for
why that is is because no-one spat the dummy if someone makes a call.
Even if they are wrong, that sort of oh-my-god-you-have-got-to-be-joking
contest usually goes over poorly. Okay, so I lied with the enough
banter bit. It's the best bit of my game. Eastern Warriors managed to
lose for the first time in the season, making the run for second place
in the Mens Division fairly interesting. Nelson's Nightmare and Western
Bogans both have a shot here. Honey Badgers 1 (not "A") also managed
the season's first forfeit, leaving the way for Monash, Caboose and SAS
to squeak into the Mixed Division final, as "1" still have a bye to
come. Only three rounds left in the regular season...

I also got a detailed report from LB of the games that are happening on
Wednesday nights in the Social Division (8:30pm-9:50pm, all welcome).
It was a good read. It is currently sitting in a box somewhere. I
hope. Next week I might even tell you about it.

I hope your week is going along swimmingly,

Sam

Albert Park League report, week 7

The season is moving to a rapid close, with only two rounds remaining.
Don't trust the information on the website, as the webmaster is a muppet.
Rounds 10 and 11 were cancelled due to the Grand Pric. I'll fix that as
soon as Telstra moves my intermernet access. Honest. (Actually I'd sack
me if I was the committee. Just not showing any commitment this season,
he says knowingly.)

So with two rounds remaining, who has a shot? In the Mens Division --
those late night junkies -- Eastern Warriors are pretty well guaranteed of
making the final. Nelson's Nightmare and Western Bogans are fighting it
out for the second spot, which should make this week's game between those
teams a good one to watch. Nup? Nup.

In the Mixed Division Honey A look the goods for a final spot, with
Serena's Caboose of Fire the only team with a chance of stopping the
Badger whitewash. Funnily enough those two teams meet for their one and
only game of the season this week. So a must win for both teams. Go
Caboose! (Sorry, I have trouble cheering for the "ones".)

Good luck all,

Sam

Albert Park League report, week 8

Hi,

I was meaning to shock you all by having this report done on Saturday
morning. My ISP completely lost it's mail system. At least for once
the delay is not my fault. As Douglas Adams once said "I love
deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by."

Well one more week of the regular season before we head into the usual
March period of interruptions and non-activity. To recap, we play the
final round in the upcoming week, then there is a two week enforced
break for the Grand Pric, followed by the finals being played on the
week starting -- assuming Mondays start the week -- April the 10th. We
have another two weeks off, which includes Nationals (Apr 22-25), before
starting the Winter season on the 1st of May. There is reason for this
madness of breaks, if not method. For those crazy enough to be heading
for Nationals there is also NUFL 2 in Sydney next weekend, and the
Australian Youth Championships on the 1st and 2nd of April, wherever
that is. I get tired just typing about it all.

Back to the Albert Park League. My apologies to Nup for getting the
score wrong in the last report. I'd like to blame my staff but that
would be ludicrous. You try and be creative for once and look where it
gets you... Nup beat Nelson's Nightmare then, and then narrowly lost to
Eastern Warriors last week. Western Bogans got their mullets out and
handed a can of whup-ass to NN thus leaving the Mens Division with the
finals decided. Even if Bogans lose this week to the resurgent Nup and
NN win, the final will be between East and West as the Bogans have a 2-1
win record against Nightmare. I'll avoid making puns like "the
Nightmare is nearly over" as it'll just get me into trouble.

For the Mixed Division is all over but the shouting. HBA's have the bye
this week which will concern them not one iota. HB1 can match their win
record if they beat MUFcoy. Regardless it'll be a Badgers final, made
more interesting by recent taunts from the A Team that they have the
more exciting name. I'm just waiting for Mister T. Caboose and Monash
will be playing off for third spot on the ladder, opening up the
interesting question as to whether we should have semi finals. (We
haven't had semi's since the old days when we used to play on Wednesdays
only. The season used to be 20 weeks long and there would be five
teams. Simon Normand would show up with three weeks to go to take his
team from last to first. Those were the days! His skill with the disc
was matched by his ability to make up arcane rules on the spot.)
Caufield Ligers and Short Attention thingy are battling it out for 5th
and 6th spots, although not directly against each other, and the last
three places are yet to be decided. Exciting eh?

And Wednesday nights sees to continuation of the Social Division. LB
tells me he is keeping my disc hostage until I mention something about
the Division. He has a point: my abilities as a roving reporter leave a
little to be desired given a distinct lack of roving. Unfortunately I
lost the email. It sounded damned exciting though. And for those who
want to get some handling experience, Social Division is definitely the
best place to do that.

Good luck with your games, tournaments and being bored to death with
eternal Commonwealth Games coverage,

Sam
