Pre Season Email 1

Hi,

It feels like a month since I've done a report, and this one will be a
dud too. Can't have people getting their expectations up. What of
course you are all interested in is the roster for the next season, and
I'm sorry that I cannot provide it. Would you believe we have never had
a Division with 11 teams in it? No, I guess you wouldn't. But anyway,
the first week of games are as follows:

Week 1, Oct. 2
7pm	Hat Team 1 v Hat Team 2
Hat Team 3 v Honey Badgers Bangers (yellow)
Honey Badgers Mash (blue) v Ishtar (black)
8:30pm	I Wish I Was Sweet As (white) v LaTUF (black,red)
Melbourne Uni (blue) v The Real MUFcoy (yellow)
	Pick-up game
Bye	Monash Uni (blue)

If all hat team players can bring a light and a dark top down to the
fields, you can work out what colours you want as well as a name.
Assuming someone has checked the fields are ready...? You may be
interested in the allocation of teams to play against each other:
alphabetical order. I'll now go to give my computer a hernia by getting
it to generate an eleven-team roster. Makes a difference from
bittorrenting illegal stuff.

Don't forget that Wednesday night training, and Social Division games
will be continuing. As will the Eastern Suburbs games on Thursday.

Regards,

Sam

Pre Season Email 2

Hi,

Just because I know you guys like to plan waaaaaay in advance, the full
roster for the Monday night Spring Mixed Division is now available at
your favourite, completely boring-styled website:

http://vfda.asn.au/albertpark/monday.shtml

Field placements are up to Ash until we get back to the normal fields,
whence I expect everyone to rush back to the same old set up. Byes have
been shaded. This is so everyone is aware that the two Badgers teams
have a bye "game" immediately after Worlds, so that everyone has one bye
during the season. Ishtar also have a bye that week, being the only
other team I could spot travelling to Worlds. Thank you adoring fan.
Actually thank Ashleigh: it was her idea. IWIWSA have also been given
all late games, as they are travelling from Bendigo.

Note that not every team plays every other team, so some teams may
consider themselves lucky on the draw. If you think I rigged that to
give my team easy games, you obviously think I'm smarter than I actually
are. What else do I need to tell you? I had pho soup for dinner. It
was very nice, thanks for asking. God, what an exciting life. Soup,
then rostering games. I think I need a lie down. Better get a cup of
tea...

Regards,

Sam

Albert Park League report, week 1

Aloha!

This week's lucky number is one, and highlighted foodstuff is Snow
Dragon Jasmine tea. I find it very soothing. The tea, not the number.
We'll get to that in a minute.

First week down of the League, eight to go, and we've started in flying
style with near perfect conditions. Perfect except for our fields,
which are in a complete state! I found this out because I turned up at
the "wrong" fields, merrily cycling passed everyone on my way. We are
playing opposite the pit buildings for the moment, in case you were
wondering. And perfect except for the wind on Wednesday. Four of five
games on Monday were won and lost by a mere point -- hence the lucky
number -- except for one that placed MUFcoy at the top of the ladder.
Fascinating. In the same way as a box of hammers is fascinating.
Wednesday saw 45 people turn up and play in the afore mentioned trying
conditions. More details as they come to hand.

Next week sees the following Monday night games (Oct. 9):

7pm	Ishtar (black) v The Real MUFcoy (yellow)
Melbourne Uni (blue) v HB Mash (blue)
	Hat Team 1 v Hat Team 3
8:30pm	HB Bangers (yellow) v Hat Team 2
Monash Uni (blue) v LaTUF (black)
	Pick-up game

I Wish I Was Sweet As (white) from Ballarat (get it right, Sam!) have
the bye this week. Wednesday sees more training (7:30pm), games
(8:30pm) and sociableness. Hope to see you down there.

Regards,

Sam

Albert Park League report, week 2

Ciao!

I have been reliably informed that up to seventy new people have been
added to the vic-ultimate mailing list. To those people welcome. If
you are wondering about these reports, they are very important and
everything contained therein is factual. There will be a test next
week. For the others wondering why this is coming out so late, I was in
Hobart for the second most important tournament of the year, after the
Melbourne Hat. The Tassie Two-Hat, with the Philip Redneck Ruddock
Throw Them Overboard Disc Golf Classic, was on over the weekend. You
have to be 1337 to attend, dude. Word. Now I am back, wondering why I
play this stupid game, 'cause I hurt.

An interesting week as the start of the season concludes. Two weeks in
and every team is named in the Monday night Mixed Division, including
the aptly labelled "I know what you are thinking. Time has little to do
with infinity and jelly donuts". Obviously they are greater fans of
Magnum PI than of current theoretical physics, given the imminent demise
of String Theory. The two Honey Badgers and Monash are the only teams
without a loss, showing the value of being an established outfit. The
Narc's showed how close the hat teams are in ability, with a one point
win over Danger Zone to follow their one point loss over "I know what
you are thinking. Time has little to do with infinity and jelly donuts"
the week before, so kudos to Ashleigh for the hat draw. The only
surprise to my mind is the current state of Melbourne Uni. Obviously
the exam-end of the year is getting to them after a successful Uni Games
campaign. Or they have different players.

Wednesday night also goes from strength to strength, even though they
managed a couple of very windy Wednesdays. Around 50 people are playing
and more are welcome to attend. Trainings are on at 7:30pm, with games
at 8:30pm until the sprinklers come on, or when someone decides it is
time for a beer.

Good luck with games this week,

Sam

Albert Park League report, week 3

Ah, weeks like the last one make you realise how long a week in politics
must be. Some say they are even 604,800 seconds long, but I think they
are just being pedantic.

To what some people like to refer to Monday night. The actual games saw
some interesting and soggy results. The move back to our normal fields
was blighted by new and somewhat playful sprinklers. After giving out
the wrong games and bye last week, I also managed to effectively
short-sheet Danger Zone in their game. My abject apologies. Personally
I blame the web master who cowardly managed to swap the renaming of the
hat teams, and I personally going to take the matter to the next VFDA
committee meeting -- when is that by the way? -- and ask for the web
master to be sacked! Strong words I know, but we have been putting up
with this buffoon's antics for over eight years now and enough is
enough. Have him removed. Please. Bangers spanked Melbourne Uni, with
James Reynolds speculating that he is the cause of their rapid demise.
Ishtar won in a forfeit over Narcs, and I'm probably responsible for
that demise. Monash had a high-spirited win over MUFcoy in the major
grudge match, which is disappointing. LaTUF proved they were over the
knobbled Danger Zone (ah the guilt coursing through my veins...).
Finally IWIWASA handed Mash their first loss of the season. All very
surprising really. So I surprise easily...

This week's games, given the problems last week, will therefore be
played on fields 18 and 19 opposite the pit buildings north of the last
fields. There will be no time changes. The games are as follows (these
have been vetted):

Round 4, Oct. 23
7pm Ishtar (black) v Infinity and Jelly Donuts (hawaiian)
Melbourne Uni (blue) v Danger Zone (orange)
HB Mash (yellow) v LaTUF (black)
8:30pm Necrotic Narcoleptics (red) v Monash Uni (blue)
HB Bangers (blue) v I Wish I Was Sweet As (white)
  	Pick-up game
Bye The Real MUFcoy (yellow)

Wednesday nights have been going along quite nicely. I would have gone
along myself if I hadn't cracked a rib. I finally get an injury worthy
of the name and Carroll goes and prolapses a disc in his back. Can't win.

Good luck this week. Maybe the fields be with you,

Sam

Albert Park League report, week 4

Damn. The year is slipping away from us all as we are just about to
enter November. I realised this as my computer told me this morning
that it was an hour and four years later than I thought it was. Ah,
2002! Where did you go? Anyway I just realised I am currently missing
the VFDA Committee meeting, so here is another guilt-ridden report...

So last week saw the end of week four of the Spring season, and we are
near the half way mark, given that the season is only nine weeks long.
Given we are not playing a full round robin it is difficult to
mathematically analyse the number of games teams will need to win to
make the semi-finals. I, of course, can do this. I just choose not to
on the basis that everything else I write is so fascinating why bother
to include facts? Let's just suggest you'll have to crank out six or
seven wins to make it. Bangers and Monash are well on the way, with
wins over IWIWSA and Narc's last week. Mash may be in trouble given
their loss to LaTUF. "I know what you are thinking. Time has little to
do with infinity and jelly donuts" have continued the season well with a
win over Ishtar and probably a complete inability to remember their own
team name at the end of game circle. Speaking of Ishtar, there is
something funny about that team. Possibly too many guys for a mixed
competition. Danger Zone, Narc's and Melbourne Uni are dangerously
close to slipping out of contention, and MUFcoy have slipped further
down the ladder after their round one top of the table effort. Bummer
dudes.

Next week sees the following Monday night games to complete October:

Round 5, Oct. 30
7pm The Real MUFcoy (yellow) v HB Bangers (blue)
  	Ishtar (black) v LaTUF (black)
HB Mash (yellow) v Necrotic Narcoleptics (red)
8:30pm Infinity and Jelly Donuts (hawaiian) v Monash Uni (blue)
Danger Zone (orange) v I Wish I Was Sweet As (white)
  	Pick-up game
Bye	Melbourne Uni (blue)

Wednesdays are still going strongly, he says knowing full well that he
has absolutely no idea. I assume, like Mondays, the games will be back
at the normal fields. 7:30pm training, 8:30pm very, very social games,
10ish the pub.

Looking forward to not seeing you there (it's the ribs still \),

Sam

Albert Park League report, week 5

Hi ho,

Ah! Another week over and another report to write. I hope you people
realise that I don't even know what is going to be in each report when I
start. Somehow it all works out in the end and good triumphs over evil.

Speaking of good and evil, what a series of games this week on Monday
night! I would say more but I haven't looked at the scores yet....
There we are, looking, looking... So, no not that interesting actually.
Although Scamby did manage to pull a disc so far out of field that
the opposition asked for a re-pull. Not seen in my memory of League,
although my memory is not working well after, after ... afshter a couple
of bootles of wiines. Shunday nightishs are fantashitcal. I love youse
all. Wheeers my kabbebb...?

Games this coming week are as follows:

Nov. 6
7pm The Real MUFcoy (yellow) v Danger Zone (orange)
HB Mash (yellow) v Infinity and Jelly Donuts (hawaiian)
Melbourne Uni (blue) v Monash Uni
8:30pm Ishtar (black) v I Wish I Was Sweet As (white)
HB Bangers (blue) v LaTUF (black)
  	Pick-up game
Bye Necrotic Narcoleptics (red)

Please remember that there are no games the week after. I repeat, no
games on Monday the 13th. Something about World Club Championships in
Perth, but my care factor is low. Although I do have a few friends
heading out this way from the US and Canada. (Keep an eye out for
Eugene especially: a guy from LA with a thumber he can throw the length
of a field...).

Wednesdays? They rock!

Cheers,

Sam

Albert Park League report, week 6

Yo,

As I write, I imagine the partially solid, thwop as this email lands in
people's in-boxes, cushioned by a large amount of spam. This week sees
a goodly proportion of vic-ultimate readers -- and the readers of this
report -- heading west in the chance that they might gain gold in the
World Ultimate Club Championships. Either that or get laid. I can't
work out which: I'm too old. Yes, after months of preparation I am
ready to lie down while others run around fields like headless...
things. Good luck to all attending Worlds. I know the chances are you
will read this when you return and I have to ask: are you feeling sore?
To those not attending: nice weather we are having...

Last Monday saw results. They are listed below, along with the results
from the previous Monday. Fascinating stuff! Just about every team had
played either five or six games. That means all but three teams have
had both wins and losses. With only two more games before finals -- yes
people, this season is extra, extra short -- almost anyone can make the
semi-finals! Yippee! Next week's games are listed below. (You might
have guessed that there were no games on Monday given I mentioned in the
last fascinating report that there were no games on Monday. I think.)

Wednesday rocks. That's all I can say about it. And it is running this
week. To quote intrepid organiser Michelle: "this week social league is
going to step up the social with some BEER!! Yay beer. We are going to
have a games night and play shtick, stubby guts, hot box etc - lots of
things you can do with a piece of tupperware but probably not ultimate.
If you want to join in the shenanigans be at Albert Park BEFORE 7.30
on Wednesday" I couldn't have put it better myself.

Tartra,

Sam

Albert Park League report, week 7

Hi,

A quite week this week, what with all the Worlds action happening the
week before. Congratulations to Chilly for the their third place in the
Open Division, and congratulations to all who went there. It sounds
like a wow of a time, not that anyone has told me much, though I did get
one story that really shouldn't be repeated. I stayed in Melbourne. It
hailed.

Now that that is over we can get on with our much more important local
lives, which entails the much more important and local league. Only two
weeks of normal rounds remain. Last week saw perfect weather and a
reduced round, making sure that everyone plays eight games. In the
battle of the acronyms IWIWSA defeated IKWYTTHLTDWIAJD (thanks to John
Hempel for taking the scores and typing that one out for me), proving
they are at least as sweet as jelly donuts. LaTUF proved tougher than
Melbourne Uni, Monash avoided the Danger Zone, and the Necrotic
Narcoleptics woke up beating a very spirited MUFcoy, thus allowing me to
write a triumvirate of pithy headliners worthy of a British tabloid.
Yes, I do need to get out more, but there is only a short break in the
cricket.

So what does it all mean? Well I'm guessing the aim of some people is
to make the finals. To get into the semi's you need to be in the top
four. Bangers and Monash are in with six wins and they can only be
overtaken by Mash should they lose both games. Mash need a win to
cement a place, so will be wanting to beat MUFcoy this week before
meeting Monash the week after. LaTUF have a bye and will need to beat
Jelly Donuts the following week to hold off IWIWSA who are just outside
the top four. For their part IWIWSA have games against Monash which
will be tough, and MUFcoy the next week (tough run for the 'coys).
Assuming LaTUF and IWIWSA wins all their remaining games, they'll have
five wins each. I could tell you who would get through then, but I'm
losing interest. The rest of you must be bored. The complete list of
games this Monday are as follows:

Round 8, Nov. 27
7pm The Real MUFcoy (yellow) v HB Mash (yellow)
Infinity and Jelly Donuts (hawaiian) v Danger Zone (orange)
Necrotic Narcoleptics (red) v HB Bangers (blue)
8:30pm Melbourne Uni (blue) v Ishtar (black)
I Wish I Was Sweet As (white) v Monash Uni (blue)
  	Pick-up game
Bye LaTUF (black)

Wednesday Social Division continues, strangely, on Wednesdays. It would
be great to see some Worlds players coming down to help newer players.
Games at 8:30pm, training at 7:30pm.

And finally don't forget the Hat. For those who have never played the
Hat before, you definitely should. Especially if you are committed
enough to read this far through my diatribe.

Regards,

Sam

PS Happy birthday Jeff Su. Glad to hear you got out for it.

Albert Park League report, week 8

Well, it's Saturday night and I'm waiting for a taxi to take me to the
Hat party. As I always do when confronted with such a situation, I
thought to myself "what can I do for the VFDA right now?". Either that
or I figured I'd be too knackered to do it tomorrow. So here's your
truncated report.

Why is it truncated, I hear you ask oh adoring fan? Because I don't
have the results. Apparently Ash has been organising a tournament as
well as running the Division on Monday. Kudos to her, Matt and the rest
of the gang. So rather than rave on like the barking mad thingy, here
are the games for Monday night:

Round 9 Dec. 4
7pm Melbourne Uni (blue) v Necrotic Narcoleptics (red)
Ishtar (black) v HB Bangers (blue)
Infinity and Jelly Donuts (hawaiian) v LaTUF (black)
8:30pm HB Mash (yellow) v Monash Uni (blue)
The Real MUFcoy (yellow) v I Wish I Was Sweet As (white)
  	Pick-up game
Bye Danger Zone (orange)

Games for the week after will be determined when we know who has
finished where.

For those needing more of a run this week, I highly recommend Social
Division on Wednesday, or even that upstart Thursday night Eastern
Suburbs affair.

Personally I think I'll be having a lie down.

Good luck with stuff,

Sam

Albert Park League report, week 9

Hi all,

I'm in Tasmania for an conference. This is lucky Sam. So of course I'm
wagging presentations on machine learning by Bor-Chen Kuo, Hsin-Hua Ho,
Cheng-Hsuan Li, and Ya-Yung Chang to instead sit in front of the Cascade
Brewery while a couple of mates do the tour. As beer is involved it
reminded me of this report and that people might like to know who is
playing who next Monday. Consider yourselves lucky you are getting
anything out of me.

Well the rounds are over on Monday nights and we only have placing games
to go. For those missed it, IWIWSA needed to win against Monash and
MUFcoy to make the final over LaTUF. LaTUF won over Magnum PI to make
them even on wins. Unfortunately for IWIWSA they lost to LaTUF in about
round two by one point, meaning they miss out on the top four. So close
and yet... As long as you don't take into account the forfeit (from
memory the least number of forfeits is higher in the ranking criteria).
Bummer. This gives the following games for next week:

7pm	Semi 1: HB Bangers v LaTUF
Semi 2: HB Mash v Monash Uni
7-8: Necrotic Narcs v Infinity and Jelly Donuts
8:30pm	5-6: IWIWSA v Danger Zone
	9-10: Ishtar v Real MUFcoy
	Pick-up game
Bye	Melbourne Uni

Now I realise the traditional draw of the semi-finals sees Monash and
Mash playing each other for the second week in a row. I know LaTUF has
played all other semi-finalists, and Bangers haven't played Mash or
Monash. So the semi's are on at the same time so -- on agreement of all
captains -- you might want to have Bangers play Monash (1v3 and 2v4).
Just leaving that as an option... In other games, we see a return to
week one with Narcs v Magnum PI, week five for IWIWASAWAWASIASA (who
asked for late games) and Danger Zone, and week one again for Ishtar and
MUFcoy. Isn't that boring?

Other than that, Social continues and is fun. And Mel and Tim are
getting married. Who knew?

I think I'll get a beer,

Sam

PS Simon Gorr mentioned over the weekend that he always reads my emails
through to the end to see if I say anything silly or witty or something.

Albert Park League report, semi-finals

Welcome all,

Last week saw the semi-finals and placing games. If you are interested
in the complete results, don't ask me, as my care factor has turned to
"scratching" slightly below "plucking nostril hairs" but above "ultimate
talk at parties" on the care-o-meter. "Farce" is not a word I use
often, mainly because I can't spell it, but it seems apropos given the
circumstances last Monday night. This saw fairly strong winds making my
usual swill-throws completely useless. Not happy Jan. In the games
that really counted, great stuff happened. Honey Badgers Couscous
managed to beat LaTUF in a close game that came down to the final point.
Meanwhile on the opposite field Honey Badgers Parmagiana managed to
steal a victory over Monash Uni after the timecap point resulted in a
drawn game, requiring them to score upwind. A fantastic effort by both
teams, spoilt only by the weather. Okay, so I was cold.

This, as you would know, being an intrepid reader of vic-ultimate, means
that we have a Badger-Badger chicken and chips final. My reaction was,
I must admit, "oh sod". Why you may ask, oh glorious reader? Well, who
else is going to be drinking on the sideline? Ishtar? I don't think
so: too wholesome. Chilly? Probably off doing push-ups getting fit for
the Asia 2012 tourney, so they can miss selection when a player from
Zimbabwe is picked up. Uni students? Everyone knows they don't drink.
Necrotic Narcoleptics? Apathetic. Who else turns up and drinks at
every final? Badger players. Bloody badger players. Then I realised
they'll be drinking anyway. So I highly recommend coming down and
heckling. I've got Dave Colls in negative-layout-catch fantasy... Game
time: 7pm, fields 18 and 19. Same rules as the rest of the season
unless the captains decide to play to seventeen. Ash will let you know
what the time cap is.

For those not playing the final or with too much energy, at roughly
8:30pm there is a pickup game. Bring a light and dark top, and be
prepared to split up. Young vs. Old is traditional (around 28 is the
split, although I won't be playing given there is no "decrepit"
classification). Another alternative could be hemisphere of origin.
I'm sure you'll work it out. And don't forget the BBQ.

Wednesday also looks like a great night. The weather forecast is good.
You should go.

Ciao,

Sam

Albert Park League report, finals

Hi devoted fan,

So I'm late with this one. My humblest apologies, with the caveat that
if your life is made that much richer by my musings on Monday ultimate
-- with some sprinklings of Wednesday because I'm too lazy to get there
-- then I would consider some medication. Seriously. It works for me.

The Monday night final saw the grudge-match of the year with Honey
Badgers Falafel playing Honey Badgers Kebabs in a game to the death. Or
to time-cap, whichever came first. (Yes, I am going to flog this
bangers and mash naming to death in this post.) Conditions were warm
during the day, and deteriorated during the early evening to something
slightly better than the week before. There were flames, cardboard
shielding, cars and bodies simply to get the BBQ working. Points go to
the group who managed to get the mattress to the sideline, providing a
much needed layout target. The field was mainly sand, so it wasn't
needed in the end.

Pork-crackling were with the wind and traditional HB yellow shirts first
and managed a couple of quick points, before either Tofu -- the only
food that tastes beige -- or myself managed to get ready. Half of the
Vegetarian Option weren't even at the field. Seasoned Meat Products
seemed ready to roll over them, being the defensive specialists that
they are. (I think that is how it worked by the way, Mash were the O
team and Bangers the D, but I wouldn't count on that information.)
Suddenly Rice woke up and scored an up-winder against Spam, then the
down-wind point to tie the game. "Papa" Egan was working well on the
poach, getting about five stops for the game for the Flour, with "Mama"
working the disc nicely in the wind with her Spamish mates. Dave Colls
threw himself at the ground a couple of times, but I couldn't work out
who that was for. Another couple of points for each team showed that
neither was dominant in the wind, with the half being rounded out
trading points with Turkey-Breast-With-A-Pork-And-Veal-Mince-Stuffing
taking the half, 8-7 over Spuds.

The crowd were shivering with excitement, or potentially cold. Sascha
and Alex had gone for the Santa suits early. Spec was contemplating his
trip to South America. Carroll was checking his legs to see if they
needed another shave, and Scamby was keeping the boys warm as he had
been told. The second half began with Fillet Mignon receiving down-wind
this time, and sporting a mismatch of shirts resembling blue. Scalloped
Potatoes In A White Wine And Truffle Sauce were wearing the yellow tops
and took this advantage by scoring the next three points to be a couple
ahead. Somewhere in here there were various calls for hammer throws
from the sideline. These were heeded as obviously the best choice of
throw given the windy conditions, and as the crowd has the best
interests of the players in mind. "Comical" comes to mind as "farcical"
seems too cruel. In an effort to keep warm, I was on my third or fourth
Coopers, so things get hazy here. Okay, they always were hazy. Work
with me here people. Time-cap was called with Sausage down one point
heading down-wind. Some brilliant grabs by Burgers were undone by a
defensive block close to the up-wind endzone from a Gnocchi girl whose
name escapes me -- she is shorter than me -- and almost saw them snatch
the win. In the end Bolognaise got the point to take the game to sudden
death play. The advantage of being downwind proved too much and Pasta
got the final goal for the win. Inspirational stuff!

The game was followed by a pick-up game between youth and beauty, and
aged and beauty, with the Santas on the aged team. One quote from the
game I remember: "Damn! Cleats!" spoken by someone running on and then
off the field in his stockinged feet. It got too cold for me, and I
went to the designated drinks pub to wait for people -- read Papa -- to
turn up. Such is life. Thanks must go to Ash for being the Divisional
Coordinator for the entire season. Also congratulations to the three
teams that won spirit. You know who you are.

On to Wednesday. I didn't go. Sorry. But I have been reliably
informed a great night was had by all. Two games were played: Serious
and Beer-in-Hand, after games of Schtick and Stubby Guts. There were
streakers, which shows how much more serious they are than those going
to Monday. I'm definitely heading down next season. Many thanks to
Michelle who got beer and pizza and ran the whole thing this season,
Craig and LB. LB has been going down on Wednesdays now, coaching and
running things, for something like 5 years now, so deserves extra
praise, in a manner that takes nothing away from Michelle's magnificent
work. Great job all.

So that's it. I hope you enjoyed Christmas and will enjoy New Years.
Don't forget to register for the next season (online via the main page
of http://vfda.asn.au/), and we'll see you there.

Sam
