Hi,
Another action packed week of Ultimate at Albert Park, with more than a
little controversy. Okay, so I'm making it up, but what do you expect
from these reports. Still, I must be doing something right: recent
polling at the fields at Albert Park indicates a growing readership with
seven readers; possibly eight if I can teach mum how to join vic-ultimate.
Results show Room With A View running two games clear in Mixed Division
2 on Monday nights, closely followed by Melbourne Uni, Monash Uni and
the irrepressible Honey Badgers. Pundits were quick to note that "The
View" are obviously cheating, considering they are yet to have a bye.
SportsBet have subsequently altered Tom Flanagan's odds on the trifecta
of Mixed 1 and 2 and Mens to 13 to 2 as a result. Opal Nera, having a
forfeit win this round, move a game ahead of Spud, and in the process
give both Where The Fox Hat and Discasaurus Wrecks a sniff of a finals
birth. The Wrecks increase their average age to 42 following an injury
to captain and speeder Ash "Ashley" Scroggie. Wednesday night saw Mixed
Division 1 complete the second full round of games, with Black Magic
leading the table one game clear of arch nemesis Aribba Aribba, closely
followed by their other arch nemesis French Fantasies, and their further
arch nemesis 7/11. Next week we're hoping to conduct interviews of the
other captains to see who their preferred arch nemesii are, and work out
if any of them know if "nemesii" is actually a word.
For next week's games, please note that both Ballarat and Room are
planning on wearing navy. Hopefully the captains will communicate with
each other or the teams or both to help save this potential fashion
disaster.
Finally, good luck to those travelling to Adelaide for Mixed Nationals.
I'm sure you'll have a fabulous time seeing a side of Adelaide most
people don't see: fields. Games for next week and results to date
follow. And I promise to finish the Hat registration real soon now...
Regards,
Sam

Albert Park League report, week 9
Hi,
I was thinking of doing this report in limerick form, but unfortunately
my poetic licence has been suspended. More importantly you should
register and pay now for the Hat (http://vfda.asn.au/hat/). For those
who don't know about the tournament, register. You will regret it if
you don't. The tournament costs only $70, and you get two days of great
ultimate, food, party and more. The cost will go up after Friday the
25th of November to $80. The important thing to remember is that you
will not get placed into the Hat until you pay. So why wait? Join in
the best tournament in the country, especially seeing as it is in your
back yard.
Enough of the hard sell. This is a league report. With the advent of
warmer weather, an earlier start time and daylight savings, the Social
Division has sprung into life, with four teams now playing from 8:30pm
on Wednesday. If you feel you are not getting enough ultimate, why not
join in for some fun. We will have scores and a ladder from next week,
I promise.
Expectations are high for the remainder of the season. We have four
rounds left with all divisions open for potential finals berths. Room
With a View are looking the goods for the final of Mixed Division Two
but the remaining finals place is up for grabs, with Melbourne Uni,
Monash and Honey Badgers likely to be in contention, and Ballarat Uni an
outside chance, given that just one game separates them all. The Mens
Division is open for all takers: Opal Nera and Spud are well placed, but
three other teams are able to make the finals. Eastern Zone look out
of the running, but considering their close 13-10 loss to Spud they
could be in consideration for the sexiest last place award.
Wednesday is a different kettle of fish: duh. Black Magic look the
goods to make the final, with a close loss last round (it would be
remiss of me not to mention Tom "Gack" Rogacki at this point). So are
Arriba Arriba and French Fantasies, at one and two games behind
respectively. 7/11 are hindered simply by the inclusion of Matt "Matt"
Barrett, who occasionally turns up. Speaking of character assassination
(as requested), Tom Flanagan has done nothing this week. Nothing. 11-1
against for the trifecta. SportsBets are very disappointed and checking
into the potential of Indian Bookie influence.
Next week I am predicting a lay-out greatest, a Shaun Freeman email
about the red team, a pregnancy, and no injuries (of course with the Hat
coming soon).
Regards,
Sam

Albert Park League report, week 10
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!!
Now things are really getting interesting with the League. The
excitement is building, the punters are getting anxious, and even recent
polling at Flinders Street Station has indicated a 1.25 fold increase in
readership of these vic-ultimate reports: we could be getting close to
the magical 15-readers mark. How excitement! Before we get ahead of
ourselves though: Hat (http://vfda.asn.au/hat/). Register and pay or be
very disappointed. The cost goes up to $80 per person after this
Friday. Oh, and if someone could remind me of who won the mens golf at
last year's hat, you would make me a very happy ex-TD/webmaster. You'd
think that I would have an attention span slightly longer than... ooh!
Email about a Rolex!
So three more rounds to go. This week Room With a View completed the
full round robin by beating every team. I figured I'd jump on the
bandwagon given the current climate of care taken by the media whilst
reporting what someone said without critical thought: Room are stacked.
Allegedly. Who will be their opponents is a more interesting
question. Honey Badgers have a bye and games against The Real MUFcoy
and Ballarat (note that ranking is done on win percentage, not number of
wins). Melbourne Uni have games against Room, Super Snizzle and The Big
O. It is looking like a Badgers v Room final, but given my betting
prowess I wouldn't be putting any money on the result. Speaking of
which Tom Flannagan's odds on the trifecta have firmed slightly to tens.
Tom: I hear there has been a run of betting against you though, so
just don't open the door to anyone named "Spider".
Opal Nera are definitely looking the goods for the final of the mens
division, but have a hard draw for the final games with both the other
finals contenders; Spud and Super Loaded. Having said that, Spud and
Super Loaded play off this Monday in a must win game. A loss by Spud
may even give Where the Fox Hat, a team already certain to win the Most
Random Team Name award, a mathematical chance of a place in the final.
(Wrecks have forfeited their game to "Where", lacking a roster deep
enough to cope with the injuries.) The only thing standing in the way
of a Super Loaded victory is the dreaded vic-ultimate email from Shaun
Freeman indicating he can't play this week.
The Mixed Division One on Wednesdays has also got interesting: Arriba
Arriba have displaced Black Magic at the top of the table for the first
time since round 2. French Fantasies are a game behind going into the
last three games of the season. All three are finals contenders. Black
Magic are looking forward to the return this week of Sam Waugh,
specialist power-sub. Bound to tip the balance.
And finally the Social Division continues to grow. All welcome to come
along for a run. I promised some results last week. I lied. That'll
teach you to trust me.
Regards,
Sam

Albert Park League report, week 11
Ohmygod, ohmygod, ohmygod! This league is just getting toooo exciting!!!
The suspense! The action!! The... okay I'm faking. Two more weeks to
go, the hat tournament (http://vfda.asn.au/hat/), blah blah. Sheesh!
Have you people thought how hard it is to make this stuff up? Haikus?
Do I look like an english major?
This week saw some interesting results in the land of Albert Park
ultimate. Mixed Division Two continued with Room topping the table and
pretty much a definite for the final (curse you Tom Flanagan!). Two
games behind are Honey Badgers, with Melbourne Uni and Ballarat a further
two games behind. This is interesting, and I say that as someone with
need of something else to do with my life. Why it is interesting is that
both Melbourne Uni and Ballarat could make the final. Badgers have a bye
next week and then play Ballarat, so they could potentially not have
another win in the regular season. Ballarat, if they win in the last
round, would have only to over-run The Real MUFcoy to match Badgers
on... okay. My brain has caught up: I don't think it is mathematically
possible, given that the first ranking criteria is win-loss percentage,
for Badgers to not be in the final. And it was looking so promising.
The tension... . Still, Super Snizzle are favoured to win the
Best Looking Team Wearing Green award.
Now when you get to look at the Mens Division we have a totally different
scenario. Or potentially the same scenario with less teams. With two
rounds to go, Opal Nera look like a shoe-in for the final (damn you Tom
Flanagan!), but they have a tough draw with Spud and Super Loaded in the
last two weeks. With Spud losing in the last week to Super Loaded --
Freeman showed -- they are pretty well tied for second place.
Specifically the ladder below shows Spud ahead, but the ranking criteria
are slightly wrong and does not take into account that Spud have
forfeited two games, which would place them lower than Super Loaded.
To the future: two losses by Opal and wins in both weeks by Spud (also
playing Wrecks) and Loaded (also playing Fox Hat) could potentially see
Opal Nera out of the finals. Certainly the second final spot is wide
open for both those teams starting with "s".
Wednesdays: I have no clue what is going on. Scamby was going to email
me the scores, but I haven't received them. LB was going to tell me about
Social, but he didn't (but thanks for returning the hat and disc I lost so
far this season, LB.) As far as I can tell anything could happen for the
Div One final: with four teams and two getting through to the final, three
can make it. Tom's odds at the trifecta have shifted on SportsBet from 10
to 1 to eights, on account of someone starting the rumour that he may have
actually dumped the disc as opposed to hucking it long. Indian bookies
are in a frenzy.
Finally, next season. Yes, something you have all thought deeply about.
Well some people have. As you know we only have fields at Albert Park on
Monday and Wednesday nights. There is the suggestion that Wednesday
night Division One will not go ahead with trainings for nationals
competing for time. Further, rumour has it that club teams from the
universities are unlikely to form. However, we have good lights, average
fields, a warm summer predicted, and some of the largest mosquitos known
to anyone outside of Canada. So what do we do? In recent times we have
received a number of, shall we say, less than positive comments regarding
the selection of teams for Mondays, given the combination of both club
and draft teams in the same division.
However it is not obvious whether separating club and draft divisions
will work. Further is it worth continuing with the mens division, and
if so should this be a combination too? Lots of questions to ask and
answer. So if you have strong opinions about what should happen next
season there is a comment stream opened on the http://vfda.asn.au/ main
page now. Feel free to add what you think should happen for the next
season. But remember, the VFDA Committee -- who volunteer their time for
the good of the sport -- will have to make a final decision that may not
please everyone... What fun!
So that's about it. Until next week. Same bat time, same bat email.

A quick email for you all -- yeah, right -- given that Hat stuff is
taking priority. Steve, erstwhile el Presidente, is running around like
a numbat on speed. So it is almost straight into the finer details of
this fascinating season...
But first the important bit: congratulations to Tom and Anna Rogacki and
Doug Moore and Justine Poulson on producing offspring in the last week.
Anna gave birth on Monday to Willem, and given genetics of mother and
ectomorphic father future international ultimate players could well be
saying "oh bugger". My prediction: he'll wear black, hate sport and end
up winning the Archibald Prize for Portraiture. On Tuesday, Justine
gave birth to Sarah, and given the way Doug Moore plays ultimate, I
certainly hope they have life-time medical insurance. My prediction:
Sarah will of course disdain flying pieces of plastic and turn her
attentions to destroying the wills of boys. Good luck to both sets of
parents. Apologies if I've missed other births during the season. I
claim (a) no-one tells me anything, and (b) I was just too excited with
the ultimate season. One statement is obviously a lie...
Monday night Mixed Division saw another win by Room (ho hum), and an
injury to Tom Flanagan!! He hurt his wrist! We were going to cross
live to the hospital, but (un)fortunately he didn't require
hospitalisation. No sense of drama, that boy. One week of the Division
to go, and it is going to be a Room, Honey Badgers final. Even if Honey
Badgers lose and Melbourne win, Badgers will have a better win
percentage and the game difference over Melbourne. So close.
Earlier and later on Monday evening saw the Mens Division resolve a
little more. Opal Nera got served by Spud; rumour has it it included a
little dance. Super Loaded also managed a close fought win over Where.
This Division is by no means settled! Next week, Opal play Super
Loaded, and Spud play Wrecks, who are awaiting the return of Ashley
"Badman" Scroggie from injury. A win by Spud may place them into the
final with an 8-2-2 record. A win by Nera will see them into the final
along with Spud. A loss, however, has the potential to see three teams
on equal wins. If this is the case, Spud would be knocked out simply on
the basis that they have forfeited twice. If that condition was not in
place, well it is anyone's guess who would make the final. Or at least
someone who, unlike me, has a concentration span longer than a gnat and
the inclination to work it out. The upshot: Spud need to win and have
Opal win to make the final. Opal Nera are in to the final regardless.
Indian bookies everywhere are no longer contemplating hanging themselves
with their cravats. Tom Flanagan's odds on the trifecta, however, have
slipped to nines, with the suggestion his wrist injury may be related to
a clandestine involvement with the Indian porn industry (What is the
Bollywood version of the Valley?? "I've come to clean ze pool, but
first, we dance!!")
Later on in the week saw, as well as a turgid email on the league,
interesting results in the Division One. 7/11 unfortunately forfeited
again, slowly wending their way to the end of an injury-plagued season.
Missing Flanagan from his Monday misadventure, Black Magic succumbed
to French Fantasies in a one point game. The result makes little
difference to the final: even if FFs win next week and Black Magic loses
to Aribba Aribba, BM will make the final based on goal difference. So
cruel... Next round will be a dead rubber, so watch out for Scamby
asserting his authority and making the final next week. How that will
meld with the fledgling Social Division final and concurrent BBQ I don't
know. Start to worry if he gets a Mini Me, a grey suit, and a Murray
River cod with a "frickin' laser"...
Until after the Hat,
Sam

Albert Park League report, week 13
[Warning: this email is rated PG-13. It contains game times, results
and implied sex scenes. Parental guidance is recommended.]
Welcome to another glorious week of ultimate at Albert Park, possibly
affected by the Hat tournament over the previous weekend. Who knows.
Certainly the conditions have been blustery over the last week. Monday
night saw the last of the pool play for Mixed Division Two and the Mens
Division. The round for Mixed Div 2 was a bit of a foregone conclusion.
A bundle of close games, though, made the round interesting. Work
with me here... Certainly one game of interest was the Ballarat versus
Honey Badgers game, closely won by Ballarat and thus making the results
that little bit closer: three teams finished the season on seven wins.
Badgers still manage to get through with the better win-loss percentage
given that they have played less games. The wonders of having an uneven
number of teams. So the final will be Room With A View versus Honey
Badgers. Tom Flanagan's odds have waved politely whilst driving past
the fields.
The Mens Division has seen Spud make it through to the final to face
Opal Nera. Spud had a forfeit win against Discasaurus Wrecks, as the
Wrecks lived up to their name and the playing list resembled something
more akin to a hospital ward. Mixed Bag had to beat Opal Nera to have a
chance of making the final, but lost in a close fought game. Tom
Flanagan's odds were seen eating caviar and drinking champagne, whilst
chatting amiably with Sam Flanagan's odds: these odds twins were
separated early in the season by injury, but Sam is also in-line for the
trifecta. Apparently.
Wednesday's Division One games were going to be a dead rubber, so an
executive decision by the Division Coordinator (Scamby), in consultation
with the VFDA President (Scamby) and team captains (including Scamby)
brought the final forward one week. Apparently a number of people were
going to have to miss the next week due to Christmas, surgery, filing
nails and plucking nostril hairs, and leaving the country (Scamby). We
therefore saw on Wednesday night the final between Arriba Arriba and
Black Magic. For a change this week we saw blustery conditions, which
may have favoured BM given AA's usual running game style of play. Black
Magic received down wind to start the game, scoring against the AA zone
with yours truly catching the goal in the corner of the endzone. Our
team subsequently panicked I assume on the basis that if I can catch a
goal against Glenn Maisey -- that well known height specialist -- then
anyone could score. For the record I took a sub. BM scored the next
two goals before AA got on the board to make the game 3-1. I think.
Then, helped my my inability to count past four, things start to get a
bit vague. So the rest of this match report could in fact be made up.
AA pegged back a couple of goals to level the scores. I seem to
remember 3-3 going to 5-4 and the half being taken 8-6. BM managed to
pull away after taking the first couple of points after the half. AA
were suffering in the conditions, with a few easy turn-overs. The final
score was 13-9. Flanagans secured part one of the trifecta, to the
delight of the Indian bookie fraternity. Even though this completes the
Div 1 season, the Social Division will continue this coming week.
Hopefully some final of some sort. Maybe not. I only write the
reports: I don't provide the content.
And thanks for all those words of encouragement with regard to the
reports, but that won't make me stop writing all this crap. I think
readership, after polling teams at the Hat, could be approaching 30.
Assuming I'm allowed to count people more than once.
Sam

Albert Park League report, week 14
Mmmm. Lovely weather we're having. I can remember something I used to
do on nights like this... Oh sod!! League report. That means...
Bugger!! I need to get registration forms happening. God. How do I do
this again...? That's right. Fire up browser. Edit files. Get out
framed photo of Flanagan, and face Woollongong... Start ftp
application. Pray to Tom. Ommm. It worked!
Hello punters and welcome to the final Albert Park League report of the
year. What a doozy of a season!! I bet you didn't expect results like
this to end the season off. I say that on the basis that I sure as hell
didn't. So, as we all know, the season for Mixed Division One ended
last Wednesday under blustery conditions, and we were expecting a better
result this week from the weather gods. Monday night saw a delightful
evening, perfect temperature, light winds, BBQ cooking nicely thanks to
the wonderous BBQ fairies (sorry, Luke and Jo), beer on tap in stubby
form, Gatorade on ice, who could ask for more?? (Actually I caught
Scamby telling Meg that he owed the VFDA $2.50 for a Gatorade... after
the Hat, I think he's entitled to a free one.) It looked like a great
evening with two top class finals planned. The Flanagan boys were
eyeing off the trifecta. Only the gods of the disc stood in the way...
fickle as they are.
So. The first game was the Mens final between Opal Nera and Spud.
Black versus White. Evil versus Good. Isn't it easy with this sort of
view on life. The conditions leant themselves towards a fast flowing
and exciting game. Which is why I can't remember any of it. For
goodness sake I have problems with my own age let alone what happened on
a field... All I remember was that after initially starting strong,
Opal Nera were equalled by Spud but drew away to take the half 8-6. The
second half saw Spud throwing into the breeze on defence. They
proceeded to, how you say, "fire up" and in reasonably short time had
scored the next three points, including a spectacular layout block by
Scamby. We were looking at an upset: 9-8 to Spud. Things got so
interesting the crowd even moved closer than the twenty five metres they
originally were from the field. Steve Wealands took a sub and grinned,
just for something different. Then the southerly change came through.
In five seconds the temperature dropped a good five degrees, the wind
picked up from slight to silly, and the whole complexion of the game
changed. Opal were running down wind and after an amount of time that
is beyond my ability to recollect: they scored. Or was it another few
points. Who knows? There was a pink llama on the field or something...
let's run with that. All I know is that the scores were level, let's
say 10-10, with Spud receiving the disc downwind. I was excited. Alex
was spilling his beer, but that could have been from shivering. Luke
and Jo were valiantly trying to make sure food kept cooking. The wind
had shifted from silly to downright stupid, and game point was on.
Carroll was the timecap controller, indicating last point: he had a
party to go to and he was dressing as a fairy. The next point was
unbelievable, which I think means I have free licence to make up
whatever I want, because you won't believe it anyway. Spud on numerous
occasions tried to shift the disc down field as quickly as possible by
the unexpected move of "hucking". Their persistence at throwing the
disc into the person marking meant they hardly got the disc beyond
halfway. I wasn't out there throwing, but it seemed the wind was strong
enough to push the disc into the ground on every downwinder. Tom
Flanagan, knowing the triple was on the line, was throwing hammers,
blades and any other crazy throw he could think of -- I was waiting for
the push-pass thumber -- to no avail, as typically steady players
dropped the disc or threw it away. Tensions were running high with the
frustration and closeness of the game: I think the foul count for this
point was higher than the game score. Finally, after tortuous minutes,
a throw went near the endzone to Lee "Butterfingers" Baker, ending what
could only be called one of the hardest fought games of recent memory.
My memory, I know, but the recent bits.
Tom and Sam had secured part two of the trifecta; Jacob Brown, he
informs me, managed to secure none of them. The next game was between
Honey Badgers, who had been warming up on the sideline, and the yet to
be defeated might of Room With a View. A number of View players were
obviously warmed up. Badgers looked like they would give them no
quarter. I tried to get a pre-match interview from Paul Egan, and for a
moment he wasn't even grinning... The conditions had not improved: the
wind had gone from stupid to sublime. Rubbish, leaves and small puppies
were blowing across the field. The game looked like it could easily go
right down to the wire. The crowd was excited! I was excited!! I went
home: I needed to get my washing in before it rained. (I managed to,
thanks for asking.) Apparently the game started with some working of
the disc, but ended with hucking. From what I was told the game went
like this: wind, toss, swearing, 0-0, 1-0, 1-1, 1-2, 2-2, shit! Yes,
the game was briefly called off due to lightning. It then had a more
permanent call off on account of the heavens opening up. And thus the
game stood (no trifecta). Thanks to both teams: you are both champions
(unless you decide on a rematch after Xmas). The crowd were with you
right until the end. As I have been saying, Tom shouldn't have been so
insistent on the betting: the gods of ultimate do not appreciate it. I
do, of course, but then I'm not welcome in India anymore...
So the final results for the season:
Mixed 1, Black Magic def. Arriba Arriba, spirit AA, MVP Tom Rogacki
Mixed 2, draw Room With a View and Honey Badgers, spirit Mixed Bag, MVP
Tom Flanagan even with Karen Wealands.
Mens, Opal Nera def. Spud, spirit Super Loaded and Eastern Zone tied,
MVP can't remember.
A big final thanks to Carroll, Scamby and LB for being the Division
coordinators throughout the season: your efforts are greatly appreciated
(esp. Carroll who marked the fields and then hung around for three hours
every Monday night). Also a big thanks to Nish, LB, Dave Trovell and
the rest of the coaching team on Wednesdays: your efforts are greatly
appreciated.
Thanks to all for playing in the Spring season at Albert Park. The
season has ended, but registration for the next season has already
opened. Just visit your favourite blue website:
http://vfda.asn.au/albertpark/. The next season includes the Wednesday
Social Division, and Monday Divisions for Mixed 2 and Mens. It runs
from the 16th of January until mid April. If you are interested in
entering a team for either of the Monday Divisions, please let either
Fee (info@vfda.asn.au) or myself know. All other players will be placed
on teams by Hat selection (no draft).
Have a great Christmas break, and we'll see you in 2006. I'm going back
to bed.
