We're also putting together a page listing all of our accommodation for this trip, which doesn't necessarily constitute a list of recommendations, but may amuse: Sam and Hal's Dodgy Hotels
Oh, and of course Hal has a blog all about food and wine...
About Sam's Journey to this Journey
In 2006 Sam managed to -- by sheer lack of imagination -- obtain long service leave from the Australian Government, simply by doing what he was told for ten years. This "doing what he was told" also included going and living in the USA for 19 months, so it has been a tough ask. On the basis that he has no debts, no mortgage and no children, he applied to have said leave at half pay. This was approved and he has been insufferable ever since, having previously decided that Italy would be a good place to spend it.
For those wondering how this magical thought process went, it went thusly. Spending my long service leave in another country sounds good. Europe sounds especially good seeing as I've lived in the Americas. Southern Europe sounds warm. I like Italian food. Hmmm...
About Hal's Journey to this Journey
In 2006 Hal managed to do more impressive stuff. Or so says Sam. Hal's not entirely sure, being, as she is, a little in shock, still claiming jetlag, and pretty convinced that there were at least 39 months in 2006.
Anyhow, the list of Hal's 2006 activities goes roughly thus:
- Jan-Feb, last months of work in Aus;
- Mar-bit of Apr, become PADI Open Water Diver, attend a beautiful wedding, travel around Aus (Adelaide, Coober Pedy, Perth, Broome, Darwin inc Kakadu and Litchfield, Cairns, up to Cape Tribulation and the Daintree for some diving);
- Apr head back to UK; end of May finally find home, after distressing period with crazy potential landlady, involving her keeping muchos money;
- July enjoy proper weather and book flights for holiday to Aus;
- Aug-Sept same ole same ole;
- Oct get money back from crazy woman (finally!), book one way ticket to Aus for December, hand in resignation, fly out to Aus for holiday;
- Nov really enjoy holiday, fly back to UK mid-Nov, spend a month and a day sorting out trivial matters such as getting a visa, selling all furniture, arranging shipping etc, and being insufferable, before flying out to Aus AGAIN (in time for a fabulous Christmas), but for good this time.
Apart from Italy...
